As woofer(s) pumps air, a loudspeaker tends to rock back and
forth. Such movement can muddy the sound. An analogy can be
found in firing a pistol: after firing a first shoot, it is
hard to fire a second good shoot. Therefore, a good
loudspeaker stand should have substantial weight for not
being moved by the woofer's pumping force.
The Ficion stand is basically a sand box finished like
furniture with a top machine-screwed to the body. For
filling in sand, just unscrew the top. Then you have an
approximately 180
lbs (150 lbs sand) loudspeaker stand.
